Benefits of the Chocky Time Activity

  • Entertaining and fun
  • Encourages healthy competition
  • Playful
  • Great for all group sizes

Props required for the Chocky Time Game

  • 1 x dice
  • Several items of clothing, e.g. hat, t-shirt, scarf, etc.
  • Knife & fork
  • A largeblock of chocolate
  • Tray

How to Play Chocky Time Game

Get a group of people to sit down in a circle on the floor, or the ground whatever works better. Arrange a tray in the center of the circle containing a knife, fork and a bar of chocolate. Then organize the clothing to lie next to the tray. Now the game begins with each person, in turn, rolling the dice, no matter what number comes up, the dice must be passed around the circle in a clockwise direction.

Nobody is allowed to move until someone rolls a six, that person then gets up and runs to the middle of the circle. They can then, after putting on all the clothing, eat the chocolate, but can only do so by using the knife and fork provided. They must cut only one square from the slab.

To summarize, the person who has donned all the clothing must try to only eat one block from the bar of chocolate, and they are only allowed to do so by making use of the knife and fork on the tray. For all intents and purposes, this seems very easy until you try it.

To make the game even more interesting, this person is allowed to continue eating the chocolate bar one square at a time until someone else rolls a six on the dice. Now the excitement starts to increase, and mouths begin to water.

Whenever another person rolls a six on the dice, the person in the middle must stop immediately from eating the chocolate and remove all the clothing. They must then go back to their original spot within the circle. The new winner will now take over the challenge.

The person in the middle may only get so far as to put on the scarf before someone else rolls another six. Alternatively, the person in the middle may be able to consume the whole slab of chocolate before another six is rolled out. You can continue playing the game until the whole slab of chocolate is consumed, or until the group start to lose interest.

Useful Framing Ideas for the Chocky Time Game

Most people love chocolate and will do anything to get an opportunity to eat some. This is what makes this game so interesting and entertaining.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Chocky Time

  • Get the group to form and circle and sit on the floor.
  • Arrange to put a tray in the center of the circle containing a knife, fork and a slab of chocolate.
  • Position all the clothing alongside the tray.
  • Choose a member to start the game, have them roll the dice and then pass it on to the left allowing each member to have a turn.
  • As soon as someone rolls a six on the dice, they can run to the center of the circle, put on all the clothing and commence eating the chocolate, one square at a time, by only making use of the knife and fork provided on the tray.
  • They are entitled to keep on eating the chocolate until someone else rolls a six.
  • When somebody roles a six, the person in the middle must stop immediately from eating the chocolate and remove all the clothing. The new person who rolled the six must then don the clothing and commence eating the chocolate.
  • The game can continue until all the chocolate is finished or until the group begins to lose interest in the game.

Practical Leadership Tips

Preferably the clothing provided should be able to be donned and taken off easily. For this reason, it is suggested that you only make use of a scarf, a t-shirt and a hat. In order to make the game even more interesting, you can also provide a pair of gloves, a hat and maybe a pair of sunglasses.

When you have a fairly big group, you can make use of two or even three dice at the same time (one dice for every twenty-five people), this will keep the whole group active at the same time.

Just a word of caution, it is not always easy to cut one square at a time from the slab. So, if you find that the contestants do not adhere to this rule and it becomes a problem, it may be advisable to break the slab into small squares before the game begins.

Seeing that you are dealing with food in this challenge, be careful to first establish if any of the group have allergies with chocolate or the ingredients in the chocolate.

Debriefing and Reflection Tips

Here are some questions for the group, which will help the process their experience of the game “Chocolate Circle”.

  • Did you have fun playing the game of “Chocolate Circle”? And why?
  • Did you feel any form of emotions during the game?
  • What did you feel when it was finally your turn to taste the chocolate? Did it have significance for you?
  • At any stage during the game, did you think of sharing the chocolate with anyone?

Popular Variations of Chocky Time

  • Run, Run, Run: Play the game as instructed above, but now put the clothing on the other side of the room or hall. The person rolling a six will first have to go and fetch the clothing, before entering the circle to start eating the chocolate. As there is loads of excitement, this may cause the person to go straight to the tray and start eating before putting on the clothing.
  • Wrapped Up: Before starting the game, wrap the chocolate up in a number of layers of newspaper or other wrapping paper. This will make it more difficult to reach the chocolate. This activity is almost the same as the children’s game “Pass the Parcel”. The person who rolls a six still needs to put on the clothing, but now they must first unwrap the parcel one sheet at a time until they reach the chocolate or until someone else rolls a six.
