The Trust Walk Activity is a team building activity which involve leadership, communication and building trust, as the blindfolded participants rely on instructions that they receive in order to avoid obstacles.

The activity starts when the groups is divided up into pairs, and then one person is blindfolded, while the other person will lead the other person through a prepared course with a small rope.

Running the Trust Walk Activity

  • Organise the group into pairs and get them to number themselves either one or two.
  • Explain to the group that during this activity, one person will be blindfolded, with the other remaining The sighted person will lead their blindfolded partner on a journey for approximately five minutes, on a pre-checked route around them. Once the first one has completed the five minutes, they will then swap their roles.
  • You will then ask the group to be creative, and to tell a story to their partners while they’re blindfolded to make the experience more interesting. This provides a great opportunity for the sighted person to be creative and for the blindfolded person to use their imagination.
  • While the sighted person is guiding their partner, they can first lead through physical contact and then progress to using verbal instructions only.
  • Always make sure that you monitor the safety throughout.
  • After both have experienced being blindfolded, switch partners and allow each person to team up with someone new.

Safety for Trust Walk Activity Team Building

  • Make sure to mark areas that are out of bounds.
  • The participant without the blindfold is tasked with leading their blindfolded team member around the course, making sure to avoid any potential hazards.
  • Participants who are not blindfolded should always be aware of their positioning when directing their partners.
  • If during the challenge any of the pairs fail to adhere to the rules, they must be asked to stop and leave the activity area.

Facilitator Activity Guidance

Make sure to use an area that is safe and easy to move around in for this challenge. Members should be open to learning from the challenge and should feel comfortable performing the activity. If at any stage a member feels uncomfortable, permit them to leave and wait on the side. You could also change the activity if most members feel the same way.

Strategically place yourself during the challenge, so as to have a full view of all participants at all times. By doing this, you will be able to stop pairs if you think there is a risk for their safety.

Debrief and Review for Trust Walk

Here are some questions, which can help members process their experience for the Trust Walk challenge:

  • Did you feel anything when you were blindfolded?
  • Did you have faith in your partner?
  • Were the instructions clear and understandable?
  • Was there a time when you felt extremely frustrated?
  • Explain how you think communication skills were important while performing the Trust Walk?
  • At any stage, did you feel uncomfortable or afraid?
